Scripture Reading, Sermon, Prayers of the People
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth,
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
Prayer for Peace
This litany for peace comes to us from the 1905 Book of Common Worship. Those who first prayed it had their own hardships and fears, just as we do. May we take courage from the great cloud of witnesses and follow their example in prayer! It has been edited somewhat for clarity and modernity.
O Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, you remain in divine unity and peace from everlasting to everlasting. We live in a world of conflict and change: give us the comfort of perfect trust in you. Bring our hearts into your peace, O God.
From the evil power of selfishness, greed, and anger, from unbridled desires and passions that cause strife in our souls and conflict with our siblings, from pride, vanity, and the desire from revenge, deliver us and save us. Bring our hearts into your peace, O God.
By love of truthfulness and fairness, by faithfulness to our duties and a due regard for the rights of others, by the spirit of kindness and the desire to give and to bless, uplift us, and quiet us, and make us strong. Bring our hearts into your peace, O God.
Guide our president and all others in authority, and all our people, and all other nations,
into the ways that make for peace on earth and goodwill among human beings. Let the swords be beaten into plowshares and the spears into pruning-hooks, and peace flow like a river. Save the world from war, O God.
O our God, heal all enmity and strife between different kinds of people, so that the rich may not scorn the poor, nor the poor hate the rich, so that all unfairness may be corrected and all inequality abolished, and so that everyone may peacefully work for the good of all. Save the state from discord, O God.
Especially for your holy Church, in all places where it is found, we beg the blessing of your peace; that all distrust, hatred, and hostility between Christians may be removed,
that all who love Jesus in sincerity and truth may learn to love and help one another in His service; that all division and strife among the disciples of Christ may disappear; and that the many folds of faith may be embraced in one flock, following one Shepherd, Jesus Christ our savior. Save the Church from inward strife, O God.
For all who are restless and afflicted by war within themselves, by the conflict of flesh and spirit, by the invasion of doubt, the rebellion of the will, and the darkness of despair; for all the lonely and the restless and the unhappy, we ask your compassion and help in time of trouble. Save your children from an anxious mind, O God.
By the example of Jesus our Savior, who learned obedience by what he suffered; by his
meekness and humility and forgiving grace; by his courage and firmness and
consistency in your work, by his submission to your will and the giving of his life to take away the sin of the world: Save us from a troubled heart, O God.
In the coming of His kingdom, in the victory of faith, in the overcoming of evil with good,
and in the peace which passes understanding; Keep our souls at peace now and forever, O God.
O God, O Author and Lover of peace, in you we find deathless life, and in your service we find perfect freedom. Defend your servants in all assaults of our enemies; that trusting in your defense, we may not fear any adversity, through the might of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
The blessing of the God of Peace, and Jesus the Prince of Peace, and the Holy Spirit of Peace, abide with us forever.
